Spring is upon us! As we gear up for an active summer, we'll be taking the dogs to the park more and letting our cats venture into the back yard.           When spring arrives our dog's activity levels increase and many dogs are expected to join family outings and vacations. Dog owners may first notice subtle signs that their dog is less eager to rise after a nap, less enthused about the daily walk, and hesitant to go up and down the stairs or jump into the family car. Athletic dogs may be eager to compete, but require longer warm-up periods or training to return to competition. These subtle changes, as your dog advances to the next life stage, are a major reason why dog owners seek veterinary care. 
          Declining mobility may signal the onset of osteoarthritis, (OA) also known as Degenerative Joint Disease, which involves pathologic changes to the joint structure. As OA symptoms progress, owners will seek symptomatic relief from veterinarians to relieve pain and allow pain-free activity. Your veterinarian may use diagnostic tests including flexion tests and radiographs to show osteophytes (bone spurs) and loss of cartilage causing a narrowing of the joint space, typical findings of advancing OA. In some cases, surgery may be indicated, but the goal is to reduce pain and inflammation and preserve joint function. Prescription NSAID's provide immediate pain relief and reduce the low-grade inflammation to improve mobility. While new generation NSAID's are less likely to cause adverse effects, they do not provide what a high quality joint supplement can - joint support.
